councilhand_agreeThe DSP attended the Downingtown Borough Council meeting on January 20, 2010 to do a presentation on the park we’re proposing, our role, the role of the borough, and our ongoing relationship.  There was no A/V setup as planned, but Wes did a great job with the modified presentation and fielding the few questions the Council had.

A number of Council members spoke up to voice their excitement about the project and their support for the youth, us, and the local action sports community.  The purpose of this presentation was to secure Council support for the project and have them agree to providing us with a centrally-located spot within the Borough to place the park.  The park will be professionally-designed and will have unrestricted access, as we are advocating for.  Borough Council UNANIMOUSLY offered their support for the park, making this project official!

The exact location of the park is unknown at this time, as it depends on when adequate funds are raised and on several other projects going on within the Borough.  We will continue to work with the Borough throughout the process, and in the meantime we are beginning to secure donations and plan fundraisers.  We’re in the process of getting our 501c3 off of the ground and working on various ways that individuals can donate.   It’s going to be a big year, so check for us!

I have been skating for over 20 years and have lived my whole life in Chester County, apart from my college years in Pittsburgh. I'm a married father of three sons, ages 10, 4 1/2, and 2 1/2. I work full-time as a counselor at a private school for learning-disabled students and am also a full-time psychology doctoral student at Immaculata University. I enjoy skateboarding as much as I ever have and I find time whenever I can to skate with my friends. I am also having fun teaching my kids to skate. I think a public skatepark in Downingtown would benefit the area tremendously- action sports participants and the wider community alike. A local park would be ideal for me, and my friends and I look forward to being able to take our kids to it. It will be a wonderful opportunity also to be able to improve the community and to be able to give something back. Another goal is to work to improve the image of action sports in the area and to ensure local participants the same respect and opportunities to practice their sports that they would have with traditional sports.
